چکیده

A continuous-time financial portfolio selection model with expected utility maximization typically boils down to solving a (static) convex stochastic optimization problem in terms of the terminal wealth, with a budget constraint. In literature the latter is solved by assuming a priori that the problem is well-posed (i.e., the supremum value is finite) and a Lagrange multiplier exists (and as a consequence the optimal solution is attainable). In this paper it is first shown, via various counter-examples, neither of these two assumptions needs to hold, and an optimal solution does not necessarily exist. These anomalies in turn have important interpretations in and impacts on the portfolio selection modeling and solutions. Relations among the nonexistence of the Lagrange multiplier, the ill-posedness of the problem, and the non-attainability of an optimal solution are then investigated. Finally, explicit and easily verifiable conditions are derived which lead to finding the unique optimal solution.

Global Optimization of the Scenario Generation and Portfolio Selection Problems

We consider the global optimization of two problems arising from financial applications. The first problem originates from the portfolio selection problem when high-order moments are taken into account. The second issue we address is the problem of scenario generation. Both problems are non-convex, large-scale, and highly relevant in financial engineering. For the two problems we consider, we a...

Multi-period project portfolio selection under risk considerations and stochastic income

This paper deals with multi-period project portfolio selection problem. In this problem, the available budget is invested on the best portfolio of projects in each period such that the net profit is maximized. We also consider more realistic assumptions to cover wider range of applications than those reported in previous studies. A novel mathematical model is presented to solve the problem, con...

Using Genetic Algorithm in Solving Stochastic Programming for Multi-Objective Portfolio Selection in Tehran Stock Exchange

Investor decision making has always been affected by two factors: risk and returns. Considering risk, the investor expects an acceptable return on the investment decision horizon. Accordingly, defining goals and constraints for each investor can have unique prioritization. This paper develops several approaches to multi criteria portfolio optimization. The maximization of stock returns, the pow...

Robust portfolio selection based on a multi-stage scenario tree

The aim of this paper is to apply the concept of robust optimization introduced by Bel-Tal and Nemirovski to the portfolio selection problems based on multi-stage scenario trees. The objective of our portfolio selection is to maximize an expected utility function value (or equivalently, to minimize an expected disutility function value) as in a classical stochastic programming problem, except t...

Comparison of particle swarm optimization and tabu search algorithms for portfolio selection problem

Using Metaheuristics models and Evolutionary Algorithms for solving portfolio problem has been considered in recent years. In this study, by using particles swarm optimization and tabu search algorithms we  optimized two-sided risk measures . A standard exact penalty function transforms the considered portfolio selection problem into an equivalent unconstrained minimization problem. And in final...
